Updated 2026-11-04: This guide is based on the latest pages from the OpenAI Help Center, Apple Support and the Google Play Help Center, and covers failed payments on all three subscription channels: web, iPhone and Android. If your only problem is a virtual card stuck on the $0 trial, go straight to 3 cases where virtual cards don't work for ChatGPT Plus.
The most common reasons a ChatGPT payment fails are a bank decline, an unfinished 3D Secure check, you or your card issuer being outside a supported region, and an unpaid balance or mismatched details on your App Store or Google Play account. OpenAI says it usually doesn't receive the detailed reason for a bank decline. So the first step is to find out which channel you subscribed through, then work through the checks for that channel.
1. First, check where you subscribed
OpenAI says your subscription is managed by the platform you bought it on: chatgpt.com purchases by OpenAI, iPhone app purchases by Apple, and Android app purchases by Google Play. A failed payment has to be fixed on that platform. Changing your card somewhere else won't help.
- Web: sign in to chatgpt.com → Settings → Billing and check whether you have an active plan managed on chatgpt.com.
- iPhone: Settings app → tap your name → Subscriptions, and look for ChatGPT.
- Android: Google Play → profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions, and look for ChatGPT. Make sure you're signed in to the Google account you subscribed with.
Go, Plus and Pro are billed monthly only. OpenAI offers no annual billing and no paying for several months in advance. You're charged every month, so if something is wrong with your card, the next renewal will fail.
2. Case 1: Your bank declined the payment (card details, address, funds, cross-border)
OpenAI's decline guide lists the bank as the first cause. Check each item:
- Card number, expiration date, CVC and billing address (including ZIP/postal code). The billing address must match what your card issuer has on file, not just any address.
- Whether the card has enough funds or credit.
- Some banks block certain online or international transactions by default. If all your details are right and you're still declined, contact your bank or card provider.
OpenAI points out that it typically doesn't receive detailed decline reasons from banks, so contacting your bank directly is often the quickest fix. When you call, explain that it's an online, cross-border subscription charge from OpenAI. Ask the bank whether its fraud controls blocked it, and ask it to allow online, international and recurring payments.
3. Case 2: The 3D Secure check wasn't completed
Many cards trigger a bank check at checkout (3D Secure / Strong Customer Authentication, SCA). If you see a message like "authentication required", "card may be invalid or authentication may be needed" or "3D Secure attempt failed", OpenAI recommends the following:
- Allow pop-ups: allow pop-ups and redirects, turn off ad and pop-up blockers, and disable your VPN if needed.
- Retry somewhere else: use an incognito window, or try a different browser, device or network.
- Keep checkout open: approve the payment with your bank's text code or app, without closing or refreshing the checkout page.
- Still failing? Call your bank: if no prompt appears or it keeps failing, ask your bank to enable 3DS/SCA for online, recurring or international e-commerce transactions, or use a different card.
According to OpenAI, customers in the European Economic Area (EEA) may be asked for SCA when they buy or renew. Just follow the on-screen steps.
4. Case 3: Your country or your card's issuing region isn't supported
This one is easy to miss. OpenAI says purchases are only available in supported countries and regions, and your card must also be issued by a bank in a supported region. Its renewal guide adds that a payment may be declined if either you or your card issuer is outside the supported regions.
- On the ChatGPT supported countries list (checked 2026-11-04), the US, UK, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan are listed, but mainland China and Hong Kong are not. A card issued in these places can be declined because its issuing region isn't supported, even if it's a Visa or Mastercard.
- OpenAI also warns that accessing its services from outside the listed countries may get your account blocked or suspended.
- On prepaid cards, OpenAI's decline guide lists only one restriction: prepaid cards can't be used to buy API credits, which require a standard credit or debit card. That applies to the API, not to ChatGPT subscriptions.
On the web, credit and debit cards work in every country. Some countries also have local payment methods: Link bank debit in the UK and EEA; UPI in India for Go and Plus; GoPay in Indonesia, Pix in Brazil and GCash in the Philippines for Go, Plus and Pro; MoMo in Vietnam; and Kakao Pay, Naver Pay and local cards in Korea. If a method you want doesn't appear at checkout, it isn't available for your region or plan.
5. Case 4: Your App Store subscription payment failed
When you subscribe on iPhone, Apple processes the payment, and OpenAI can't see or change it. Apple's official approach:
- Check your details: your name, billing address and other details must match what your bank has on file.
- Switch cards: add a new payment method first, remove the old one, then try the purchase again.
- Unpaid orders: "billing problem with a previous purchase" or "verification required" means an earlier charge didn't go through and you have an unpaid balance. Until you pay it, you may not be able to make purchases or download free apps, and your subscriptions may stop working.
- Region mismatch: your payment method must be usable in your Apple Account's country or region. A US Apple Account, for example, needs a payment method that works in the US. If the payment method is fine but the account region is wrong, change the account's country or region.
- "Purchase Not Completed": Apple has detected suspicious activity, and you'll need to submit a purchase review by following the prompts. Apple Support can't submit or speed up the review for you.

Paying an unpaid balance with a gift card (per Apple):
- Add funds: redeem an Apple Gift Card or App Store Card to add money to your Apple Account.
- Open purchase history: Settings → your name → Media & Purchases → View Account → Purchase History.
- Pay what you owe: tap the order marked in red with "Amount You Owe", then tap Pay with Apple Account Credit.
- Or retry your card: go to Settings → your name → Payment & Shipping → Fix Payment Information → Try Again.
Apple says your account balance can pay for App Store app subscriptions, but some subscriptions can't be charged to your balance, and some purchases need a credit card on file even when you pay with your balance. To change your Apple Account's country or region, you must first spend your balance, cancel any subscriptions that block the change, and wait for the subscription period to end.
6. Case 5: Your Google Play subscription payment failed
Google Play lists five card-related error messages:
- "Unable to process payment: low card balance"
- "Unable to complete transaction. Please use another form of payment"
- "Your transaction cannot be completed"
- "Unable to complete transaction: expired card"
- "Correct this card info or try another card"
To fix them: sign in to payments.google.com and remove or update any expired cards. Select Edit to check the billing address, making sure the ZIP code matches the address your card is registered to. Check that you have enough funds, submit any extra information Google asks for, and contact your card issuer if it still fails.
If you see "Your payment was declined due to an issue with your account", Google may have spotted a suspicious transaction or need more information to protect you from fraud. Go to the payments center, act on any alerts and verify your identity if asked, then make sure your name, address and payment details are current. If your payments profile has been deactivated, you'll see a critical alert under Alerts at the top of Google Pay. Submit your information there and watch your email for the review result.
7. Case 6: After a failed renewal or a duplicate charge
A failed renewal doesn't mean your subscription has ended. OpenAI's Pro guide says a failed renewal payment does not by itself end your subscription. For web subscriptions, follow the payment recovery instructions in your billing email. For Apple or Google Play, check the store's payment settings. OpenAI doesn't publish a grace period, so fix a failed renewal as soon as you notice it.
- Adding a new card doesn't settle the failed payment: OpenAI warns that adding a new card doesn't confirm a failed renewal has been paid. Check your subscription and payment status on the platform you subscribed through.
- Apple keeps retrying: when an Apple renewal fails, the subscription isn't canceled automatically. It may look inactive in ChatGPT while Apple keeps trying to recover it. If you start a new subscription on the web or Google Play and later update your Apple payment method, Apple may use the new card to renew the old subscription, leaving you with two subscriptions and two charges. So either fix your Apple payment method and let Apple recover the subscription, or cancel the Apple subscription first, confirm it won't renew, and wait for it to end before subscribing on the web.
- Charged twice: first check which platforms have an active subscription and cancel the one you don't want. Request refunds for Apple subscriptions from Apple. For Google Play and web subscriptions, contact OpenAI Support while signed in to the ChatGPT account that was charged. OpenAI notes that holding two separately purchased subscriptions doesn't automatically qualify you for a refund.
- Paid but still on Free: don't buy again. Make sure you're signed in to the account that paid. In the app, use Restore purchases to sync your subscription. If that doesn't work, contact Support with your receipt or the last four digits of the card.
8. Update your payment method on the ChatGPT website
- Open billing settings: sign in to chatgpt.com on the web → Settings → Billing.
- Add the new card: under Payment methods, add the new card, then open its "•••" menu and select Set as default.
- Remove the old card: open the old card's "•••" menu and select Remove. The default card's menu may only show Edit, so make the new card the default first. OpenAI recommends adding the new card before removing the old one so your paid service isn't interrupted.
- Update your billing address: under Billing information, select Edit, make your changes, then save.
- Can't find these options? Some accounts use a billing portal: go to Settings → Account → Payment and select Manage. If payment controls don't appear, sign in to the same account in a different browser.
Note: removing a payment method doesn't cancel your subscription or reverse past charges, and an unpaid invoice may stop you from removing the old card.

Don't click Subscribe over and over within a few minutes, and don't buy again on another platform before checking your original subscription's status, or you may end up with two subscriptions. When you contact Support, OpenAI suggests including the product, whether the error appeared when adding a card, at checkout or at renewal, the exact error text, and your local time and time zone. Never share your full card number or security code. Only use ChatGPT in supported regions and follow OpenAI's Terms of Use.
