Mira Murati, OpenAI's former Chief Technology Officer, recently officially announced her departure and the founding of her own AI company. Murati held a key position within OpenAI and had previously supported current CEO Sam Altman amid changes in the company's leadership. Surprisingly, however, after helping stabilize the situation in support of Altman, she too chose to leave.

Unlike other former OpenAI employees who joined Anthropic after leaving, Murati decided to start a company on her own. Notably, well-known AI researcher Barret Zoph also resigned from OpenAI around late September, alongside Murati, but likewise did not choose to join Anthropic. According to reports, Zoph is also considering founding his own AI company, while Murati is currently actively recruiting both current and former OpenAI employees to join her new project.

Murati joined OpenAI in 2018 and was promoted to Chief Technology Officer in May 2022. During her tenure, she became not only a public representative of OpenAI but also led many key projects. For example, at the spring 2024 launch event, Murati hosted the demonstration showcasing ChatGPT's advanced voice features.

The news of Murati's startup marks the start of a new round of competition in the AI field. Industry insiders speculate that her new company is expected to raise $100 million in funding. How she will compete with companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic going forward is worth the industry's continued attention.
