Try it yourself!
Start with a drum loop with a strong kick. Add a sustained track, like a synth pad or choir. On that track, add a compressor and pick the drums under Sidechain.
Lower the threshold, then shape it with attack, release, and ratio.
Then dance music made it a signature 🔈
Send the kick drum into a compressor on everything else and the mix “pumps” with the beat. It defined practically defined French House in the 90s and 2000s and the EDM wave after it.
Sidechaining got it's start early radio 📻
Engineers fed a filtered copy of an announcer’s mic into a compressor to tame harsh S sounds (de-essing). Then they used it to automatically duck background music whenever the host spoke. Radio still does this today!
