Claude’s KYC and CVP: Two Verification Layers You Need to Know About

Anthropic’s Claude has introduced two distinct verification systems: KYC (Identity Verification) and CVP (Cyber Verification Program). They serve different purposes and target different user groups.

1. KYC – Identity Verification

KYC (Know Your Customer) requires users to verify their real identity using a government-issued photo ID (passport, driver’s license, or national ID) and a live selfie, processed through Persona Identities.

This verification is mainly for consumer plans (Free, Pro, Max) and is triggered for certain features, high-risk usage, or compliance requirements. It rolled out gradually in 2026.

2. CVP – Cyber Verification Program

CVP is an application-based program designed for cybersecurity professionals. It allows approved users and organizations to bypass default “dual-use” safeguards when working on legitimate offensive security, vulnerability research, or defensive tooling.

Applications are reviewed by Anthropic (usually within 2 business days). Once approved, relevant restrictions on Opus and Sonnet models are lifted, while prohibited malicious uses remain blocked.

Key Differences & Summary

  • KYC: Proves “who you are” – required for general access and compliance.
  • CVP: Proves “what you do” (legitimate cyber work) – optional but powerful for security professionals.

Ordinary users will mostly encounter KYC, while cybersecurity researchers and red teamers benefit greatly from CVP approval.
